New Brighton Surf Club
The New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club located on the eastern suburb of Christchurch.
It is New Zealand's oldest surf lifesaving club having been formed in July 1910.
It's members have been looking after swimmers at the New Brighton beach for many years
The new building will be a great asset for the community and Christchurch itself.
The club has been granted resource consent for a new clubrooms, to replace the existing building on Marine Parade.
The project is expected to cost about $2.3 million. The build is expected to take about a year, but cannot start until a lease for the land has been finalised.
The club is now renegotiating its existing lease with the Christchurch City Council. It has to be changed as the new building's footprint of 607 square metres will be larger than the 347sqm clubrooms it has now.
The new build has been designed to allow people to sit under shelter and watch the sea, as well as host community classes, weddings and other functions.
New Brighton Beach is patrolled on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays between 16 November 2018 and 17 March 2019. Volunteer lifeguards patrol from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturdays and 10:00am to 5:00pm on Sundays.
