Christchurch United Football Club
We were one of the founding clubs of the first New Zealand National Soccer League in 1970.
Christchurch United FC is a proud football club based in Christchurch, New Zealand, with a strong history of provincial and international representative players, championship wins and Chatham Cup success.
The club was a partnership between Shamrock, Rangers, Christchurch Technical and Christchurch City to create a new entity to compete at a national level.
Christchurch United has become the most successful football club in the city and one of the most dominant clubs in the country for several decades.
Between 1972 and 1991 Christchurch United won six national league titles and six Chatham Cups, including the famous double in 1991, the club’s most successful season.
Christchurch United’s influence went far beyond the local arena, as the club produced or recruited a huge number of players who went onto represent New Zealand.
This included the core of the legendary All Whites who competed at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, players like Steve Sumner, Grant Turner, Bobby Almond, Steve Woodin and Frank van Hattum who all wore the blue and white of United in the prime of their careers.
That World Cup pedigree was continued by two other former sons of Christchurch United, All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen and Ben Sigmund, who were part of the unbeaten New Zealand team at the 2010 World Cup.
