Welcome to Christchurch the Garden City of New Zealand
Without a doubt the most scenic city in the country with its expansive parks steeped in history and suburbs of well-tended gardens, it is little wonder that Christchurch has laid claim to this title for a hundred years.
Traditional streets and buildings many of them restored to take you back to a very English heritage, now a magnificent city of colours and seasons that may well also claim a title of being ecofriendly in the future.
Enjoy the 165 hectares (407 acres) of Hagley Park and the 21 hectares of one of the top Botanic Gardens in the world.
Walk beside the Avon River of Christchurch or Ōtākaro, as it winds its way through our city. Take a ride on a Punt or paddle a Kayak between the tree lined banks of the river as you pass under the many foot bridges allowing easy access to the surroundings.
Christchurch is the gateway to New Zealand's South Island.
Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the mighty Southern Alps.
Christchurch was included in the prestigious New York Times' "52 Places to Go in 2020".
