• About a Hearing Aid

Welcome to Merivale Hearing Christchurch

After having a Hearing test and you now need a Hearing Aid or need to replace an existing hearing aid there are some things to think about.

Hearing aids are generally categorised according to type. There are two basic types:

  • Behind-the-ear systems (BTE)
  • In-the-ear systems (ITE)

The type that is right for you depends on your hearing loss and the anatomy of your ear, as well as personal requirements with regard to technology and design.

Behind-the-Ear hearing instruments are inconspicuous and comfortable as they do what the name says: they sit behind the ear. BTE hearing instruments are available in two variants: with a tube that delivers the sound from the hearing instrument into the ear, or with an external receiver that sits directly in the ear canal. BTE hearing instruments are available in different performance levels and in many individual colours and designs.

In-the-Ear hearing instruments are worn directly in the ear. They are custom-made based on the anatomy of the wearer’s ear. They sit either in the bowl of the ear or deep in the ear canal.
