Metro Sports Facility - Taiwhanga Rehia Christchurch
Metro Sports Facility, Taiwhanga Rehia, for Christchurch will be the largest aquatic centre and indoor recreation and leisure venue of its kind in New Zealand, accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
The complex will be well equipped to host local, national and international events. The Metro Sports Facility will sit within Moorhouse Avenue, Stewart Street, St Asaph Street and Antigua Street. It will be easy to get to by public transport, private vehicles and the new walking and cycling links through the central city.
On 28 March 2019, it was announced that the $221 million contract to build the Metro Sports Facility has been awarded to CPB Contractors Limited. Construction is set to begin in May 2019. Construction of the facility will be managed by Ōtākaro Limited, and construction will be jointly funded by the Crown and the Christchurch City Council, with the Council being the operator of the facility after completion. It is expected to open in late 2021.
Work is under way on installing the first of about 8000 in-ground stone columns to support construction of the new Metro Sports Facility.
The facility will include a 10-lane 50-metre competition pool with spectator seating, a diving pool, leisure pools, hydroslides, multipurpose indoor courts, group fitness rooms, an aquatic sensory space, and a high performance sports centre with facilities for coaching and training.
A fantastic asset for Christchurch
