- Highest scoring side wins after 80 minutes.
- Extra time could be played in the sudden-death games.
- Tries are worth five points, with an extra two given when converted “ball is kicked over the cross bar and between the posts”.
- A penalty try can be given by the Ref and is worth seven points “no conversion is needed”.
- A penalty kick is worth three points.
- A drop goal is worth
- The ball cannot be passed forward. This fundamental law of the game means anyone who's ahead of a team-mate that passes or kicks the ball will be ruled 'offside'.
- Peanalties will be given for offside defenders must be 10m back at restarts.
- Players not involved in a scrum might stand 5m back from the hindmost foot of the set-piece.
- In broken play players must remain behind the hindmost foot in the rucks.
- A ruck is formed when at least one player from each team is on his feet, in contact and over the ball. Players cannot use their hands to grab or hook the ball back.
- An arriving player must join the ruck from behind the offside and be on their feet.
- A tackle can take place anywhere in the field of play.
- A ball carrier cannot be tackled above the line of the shoulders, if a player is in the air he cannot be tackled.
- The maul.
- The driving maul, usually off lineouts, can be a major weapon for some teams. It's illegal to collapse a maul.
- A player must enter a maul from an onside position, and bind with the hindmost player.
- One referee controls the game. They have assistant referees “touch judges on both sidelines”, and TMO’s a television match official.
- A yellow card given sends the player to the "sin bin" for 10 minutes
- A red card sends the player off the field and will not return to the match.
The knockout games at the World Cup will go into extra time of 10 minutes each way. - If the scores remain tied after extra time, an additional 10 minutes will be added and the first team to score declared the winner.
- If the deadlock still isn't broken, a kicking competition will be staged with each team nominating five kickers to take a shot from three different areas on the 22m line.
- If the score is still tied at the end of the contest, the same five penalty takers will continue in a sudden-death format until a winner is determined.
