Colony of rabbits move into empty site in central Christchurch

A new colony of urban-dwelling rabbits has been spotted living among the bright lights of Christchurch's central city, jut by the Transitional Cathedral.
The rabbits are living in an empty grass space near the Cardboard Cathedral on Hereford St and have become quite accustomed to human presence.
The rabbits can be approached quite closely due to their exposure to city life.

At least 11 bunnies have been spotted at the site. Their exposure to city life has meant people were able to approach them without startling them.

Resonate are a visual production business operating directly adjacent to the rabbits' patch. Managing director Simon Waterhouse said seeing the rabbits had become part of his daily routine.
"We see them all day every day," Waterhouse said.
"Our customers always say 'oh my god you've got rabbits' and they're a big hit with the tourists. They're pretty tame so you can get within a couple metres but they won't let you close enough to touch them," he said.

The rabbits weren't a problem as they lived under the portacoms and in the hedges, he said. "They mostly just keep to themselves along, with a couple of ducks that have now moved in."
