Spoofing is a game played by gentlemen, thus, when a fellow spoofer guesses the correct amount of coins he must refrain from showing any emotion and in a polite and gentlemanly manner say, something along the lines of "Thank you gentlemen, it has been a pleasure spoofing with you, "Note boasting can be costly and may involve Port.

Although some players have been known to avoid paying their fines which is frowned on as the game is about honour and in doing so a player may gain a new nickname that is less desirable than the one they currently have.

Three coins of the same denomination are to be used
Coins to be shown at the start of the round
Starting call to be decided on by spinning of a dead match, pen or second hand of watch (in a casual Spoof new rounds are usually mugs away loser of the last round)
First opener of the round can nominate the person to the left to start the round although depending on the school this rule can vary, be careful when using the nomination rule though as in a school of five or more it can lead to a less than ideal result.
Zero to three coins can be held out in a closed fist above the table and the other empty hand should not be held close to this hand
One call for each person and the number can only be called once
Once all players have called their numbers starting from the 1st caller coins are displayed in an open palm or placed on the table
Player who guessed the correct total number of coins in the school drops out
Next round starts with the player to the left of the original caller going first
Last man standing buys the half round (or in competition gains points)

Women don't usually play as they tend to beat the men (although there are two recognised spoofs including the European champs that include women). In 2017 the daughter of a Canterbury Spoofer "Alan Jolley" won this title.

One superstition associated with the game is that beginners are at an advantage.

There is some reason to this as such players are usually rather unpredictable.

A further superstition is that the person who first suggests playing spoof will lose the first game of the evening. Again there may be some scientific basis for this given that enthusiasm can be correlated with alcohol consumption which can, in turn, be inversely correlated with proficiency.
