Tūranga Christchurch Central Library
This Christchurch had nearly 550,000 visitors in the first six months of it opening its doors.
The $92 million five-level centre housing more than 180,000 items, Tūranga holds a music studio, video editing suite, 3D printing, robotics, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, a café, Spark Place, the Innovation Zone, the TSB Space function room and a children's play area.
Tūranga, the most modern public library in the Southern Hemisphere and the largest in the South Island, has another claim to fame: it’s the home of New Zealand’s largest digital touch-wall the Discovery Wall!
Tūranga Christchurch is a name that carries with it considerable responsibility. Tūranga speaks of whakapapa across generations, connections to the north and out to Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa and the wider Pacific. Recounted in the waiata ‘E Tuku Ana’, Tūranga is celebrated in a depiction on the west-facing outer wall of the library building.
An innovative structural design for Tūranga has won a leading seismic resilience award.
