The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board has requested the right to make a submission against a proposed liquor store on Memorial Ave.
The bid to stop a liquor store from opening in Christchurch may get a boost from the local community board.
A record-breaking 207 objections have already been submitted to the city council over the proposed liquor store on Memorial Ave, Fendalton.
Now the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board has also requested the right to make a submission against the planned store at a hearing to be held by the district licensing committee.
City councillor and board member James Gough has been nominated as the board member to attend the hearing and advocate on behalf of the community.
Cr Gough said it is clear the community is fundamentally opposed to the liquor store.
"It appears like a completely inappropriate place for a liquor outlet. It is blatantly obvious there is significant opposition in the community," he said.
He says it is too early to say what the board's submission will include, given it is waiting on permission to make a submission from the district licensing committee.
But it is likely the submission will echo what the community has been saying, he said. Their concerns include alcohol availability already being sufficient in the area, traffic issues and a lack of parking.
