For the next four weeks Police have one overwhelming priority: to prevent crime and keep people and property safe during the COVID19 shutdown. Many in the community feel anxious and unsettled. However we are united against COVID19.

Police will primarily seek to educate people and encourage everyone to be calm, be kind, and stay at home. They will escalate their response if required and have a full range of powers from issuing warnings to making arrests and prosecuting.

For non-emergencies, people should dial the new ten-five number (105), and in life-threatening circumstances where people are at immediate risk, they should dial 111. Anonymous calls can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Eagle helicopter is a busy Chopper

Eagle helicopter dealt with 17 different incidents over two shifts on Monday March 9th in Canterbury.
The incidents included a number of serious assaults that grounds staff requested Eagle support for and traffic offences including a failure to stop.
In one incident, ground units were conducting an inquiry at the address of an offender who was wanted for an alleged assault. Ground teams waited for Eagle before entering the address where the suspect surrendered himself to Police peacefully.
In another incident, they were advised of two people shoplifting then leaving in a suspected stolen car. Eagle were directed to a known address and located the vehicle parked in a carpark next door.
Eagle directed ground teams into the address where they were able to block the vehicle in and take the suspects into custody. A large amount of the stolen goods were located in the garage.
In a further incident, Eagle observed a vehicle speeding through the Christchurch CBD, Eagle observed the vehicle drive erratically and a ground unit signalled for it to stop and it didn't. Suspects then drove the vehicle to an address where the two occupants fled the vehicle.
Eagle set cordons and directed ground teams again to the locations of the suspects, both of whom were taken into custody. One suspect is currently on active charges and the second had warrants to arrest.
A Big Thanks Eagle for the help!
